Heavy-duty Lifting Beams

lifting beams

Lifting beams (Spreader Beams)

How they work: typically feature two upper lifting points connected to the crane via slings. The beam mainly works in compression along its axis.

Use: ideal for long, wide or flexible loads where stability is essential.

Lifting beams (Lifting Beams)

How they work: the crane hook is directly connected to the top center. The beam is subjected to bending stress.
Use: suitable when the center of gravity is well known and stable, or for rigid loads to be balanced with a single lifting point.

Design and manufacturing of lifting equipment

Reference standards:

  • DIN EN 13155 – Cranes safety – Non-fixed load lifting attachments
  • DIN EN ISO 5817 – Evaluation of welded joints and test certificates; required class: B
  • EN ISO 12944-(x) – Corrosion protection of steel structures; required class: C3/P1
  • Eurocode 3-(x) – Design and construction of steel structures
  • EN 13001-(x) – Crane design (former DIN 15018)
  • Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
  • ASME IX – Welding and brazing qualification
  • AWS D1.1 – Structural welding code – Steel
  • EN 15614-1 / EN 287-1 – Welding procedure specification and qualification

Certifications and compliance with third-party bodies are also available: DNV, ABS, RINA, SGS, Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s. One of the main challenges in this sector is meeting the essential requirement of providing a complete lifting system, tested and certified before on-site use and therefore prior to delivery.
ETS has designed and manufactured a testing machine to test lifting beams (Spreader Beams) with capacities up to 1000 tons. The structure is designed to simulate real lifting conditions, using two hydraulic cylinders up to 540 tons. The machine is certified by a third-party body: Bureau Veritas.

In addition, ETS has designed and built an impressive test bed with a capacity of up to 500 tons and a length of 25 meters. This bench is specifically used to test ropes, shackles and turnbuckles. Dedicated software provides all the necessary information on testing activities.

Thanks to the testing machine and the test bed, ETS is able to supply lifting systems fully certified by notified bodies.
